Meet Taire Avbovbo: The Man Behind Odrin

Taire Avbovbo (33) first followed the trusted path – pursuing a degree in engineering and then working as a corporate consultant thereafter – before heeding the call to pursue his passion for Africa’s potential as a global powerhouse through his burgeoning brand, Odrin.

On Finding His Balance

I grew up in a household that was a mix of technical – with my father working as a geologist all his life – and business and design from my mother who is a fashion designer who runs her own business. I was always caught between both worlds, but knew I wanted to do something that would better tackle the kind of problems I know we have on the continent. For me, those problems were more about business and leadership, and I wanted to make a real impact back home.

I believe that we can change lives by building successful businesses, and I wanted to be part of this solution. I left my full-time job to pursue something I am genuinely interested in, with the belief that my passion and unique skills perfectly equipped me to form Odrin.

On The Odrin Difference

Odrin is at the intersection of two things I love – retail and technology. I think about fashion a little differently: fashion should be aspirational while still being functional, and geared towards the end goal – the complete outfit. And Odrin balances these traits by helping people build better wardrobes while spending less time shopping, and getting the best outcomes. I wanted to create something that is relevant to regular people, but still feels aspirational.

On Putting Africa On The Map

When we think of African business, we think of commodity-driven industries like oil and gas. But when it comes to consumer-driven industries, like fashion, there are very few African success stories. And that’s what we need – the next Ralph Lauren created right here in Africa! I want to succeed just to be a part of changing that narrative for those who will come after me. I want to inspire Africans to do the things that the world thinks are improbable for us.

On Building The Best Team

I believe successful business isn’t always about finding the best people to take you to the next level; I think it’s about finding people who are good at what they do, committed to learning and growing, and being the catalyst that makes them the best. Don’t just find the best; create the best! It’s my responsibility to add value to the people who come and work with us at Odrin.

On Remaining Flexible

I’m constantly amazed by how much of the value of my business is derived from things that I didn’t plan or couldn’t necessarily have anticipated. You can plan – and you always should plan – but in business, the chips will always fall where they may. You need to always stay flexible and open to change, but trust your instinct.
